Study Reveals ‘Luckiest’ Month to Play Powerball in Louisiana
(KMDL-FM) The word "luck" means different things to different people, but in terms of the Powerball Lottery, players in Louisiana associate the word luck with winning. Louisiana has had its share of jackpot winners in the game. Six of those wins came in the months of February, May, and September. Each month boasts two jackpot wins each. And then there is July.
How Many Powerball Jackpot Winners Have Come From Louisiana?
Powerball has produced 10 jackpot winners since we started playing in 1995 in Louisiana. Louisiana has never produced a jackpot winner in the other multi-state lottery game available in the state, Mega Millions. Of course, Powerball had a decade or so head start on Mega Millions, so maybe that's why the state's players lean more toward the red Powerball as opposed to the gold Mega Ball.

If you're going to believe in luck, then you have to believe in timing. And there is one school of thought that suggests when it comes to winning the Powerball jackpot in Louisiana, three months are very lucky and one month has not treated the state's Powerball players kindly.
Why Are February, May, and September 'Lucky Months' in Louisiana?
February appears to be a luckier month because of Mardi Gras. I'll explain. We have more visitors in the state, which means more potential players. We also have more people actively spending money on stupid things like Mardi Gras beads, feather boas, funny hats, and a chance to be a millionaire.

May could be a lucky month because of graduation and Mother's Day. Yeah, some of us get Mom a Powerball ticket. I do know a lot of us give lottery tickets for graduation. I think you have a better chance with the lottery than the diploma, right, history majors?
September is the start of school and, more importantly in Louisiana, the beginning of football season. A lot of people are on the road; they're buying gas, they're buying beer, they are buying Powerball tickets. Again, no concrete evidence other than that's what we see and hear with our own eyes and ears.

The unluckiest month to buy a Powerball ticket is July. I think that's because a lot of us take a vacation in July. We are out of town, and we want to spend our money on things instead of dreams about things. We're "living our rich and famous" lifestyle, so there is no need to invest $2 or $3 for the Power Play.
