(Lafayette, Louisiana) - Many residents throughout Acadiana prepared for potential flooding in their area by placing sandbags near their homes or businesses. Still, once the rain stops, it will be time to relocate the bags.

Several inches of rain did fall in Acadiana, and while there may not have been widespread flooding like we've seen in previous storms, ditches and coulees in the area were filled with water.

As you're aware, those places can be "homes" to rodents and reptiles, and once filled with water, they look for higher ground and secure places to nest. Well, the sandbags you've placed around your property can be an attractive nesting place, so you want to be aware of what may be hiding near your home.

When you go to pick up your sandbags after the storm threat, watch for snakes, spiders, rodents, and other unwanted guests that may be tucked between the bags you placed down.

Like all of us, they too don't want to get wet, and they will seek places that are safe for them as the water rises.

I encourage you to share this friendly reminder with others on social media so that they are aware of what may be hiding between their sandbags in the days ahead. Also, if you have a secure place to store the bags, out of the elements, it's a good idea to hold on to them as we approach hurricane season.

Let me note here that you should not place the sandbags outdoors if you plan to use them again this summer, as the elements could damage the bags.
