(KTDY) - We have some unfortunate news to share here, the water in the Gulf is warming up as we approach the peak of hurricane season.

While the season has been relatively tame for the Gulf Coast thus far, we are beginning to see more waves form off the coast of Africa, but fortunately, no major storm has posed an immediate threat to the continental U.S.

Still, we cannot let our guard down as hurricane season goes through November, and the sea surface temperatures make it very favorable for tropical storm development.

Meteorologist Scott Pilie posted this in a social media post, and it is a bit concerning as we approach the peak of hurricane season: "The Gulf, Caribbean, & western Atlantic water is running 2-4 degrees hotter than average with buoys reporting 85-90° water temperatures."

He would add that you should remain vigilant as we enter the peak of hurricane season, and remember to trust your local meteorologist when it comes to forecasting tropical developments.

And remember, when your local officials say to prepare or evacuate for a storm, you should always listen to their advice, as your well-being is always in their best interest.

Let me also note that long-range forecasts are subject to frequent changes, making it crucial to check back for the latest storm details. The path of a storm can change quickly, and let's hope this warm water to the south of us doesn't attract a storm anytime soon.

Check out how warm the water is not only in the Gulf, but also to the east of it, in the western Atlantic. We say to the cool fronts, "Come on down."
